St. Leonard’s Church, Middleton

The clock tower of St. Leonard’s Church, Middleton (also known as Middleton Parish Church) is pictured here from Jubilee Gardens, just behind Middleton Library.

The stairway in the foreground was designed by the renowned architect Edgar Wood and bears the inscription:

“Who works not for his fellows starves his soul.
His thoughts grow poor and dwindle and his heart grudges each beat, as misers do a dole.”

This staircase originally included a fountain, in which stood a small statue of a boy, although that has long since disappeared.

This is my first HDR (High Dynamic Range) photograph and is an amalgamation of 4 exposures ranging from 2 seconds down to 10.5 seconds. The merge was done using the HDR function of Corel Paint Shop Pro X2 and the resulting image converted to B&W.

Camera: Canon EOS 550D w/ 17-85mm IS USM @ 20mm; Exposure: 2-10.5 sec @ f7.1 ; ISO: 400
