Black-Headed Gull Swooping

Black-Headed Gull Swooping

As we had some rare Spring sunshine today, a friend and I dusted off the telephoto zoom lenses and went up to Hollingworth Lake, Littleborough. Lots of Black-headed Gulls around, along with the obligatory ducks and swans.

The Black-headed Gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) is one of the most common inland gulls in Britain. The name is a little confusing since their heads are white in the winter, and turn darker – actually a very dark brown – in the summer. Obviously the bird above thinks that summer is here already!

This shot is one of my favourites from the day – you can clearly see the tasty(?) morsel that the gull has swooped down for, narrowly missing the bird in the background who decided to show off at that very moment!

Comments welcomed, as always.
