The Photos Of Roy Cunningham

Another Black-headed GullĀ (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) from yesterday’s trip to Hollingworth Lake at Littleborough.
This shot confused me when I first saw the result, because I couldn’t work out why the beak has a white stripe down it. Then I realised – it’s the soggy piece of bread that the bird has dived down to collect. D’oh!
I’m no expert on the feeding technique of gulls, but this little chap seems to have hit the water a little harder (i.e. deeper) than would normally be expected from such an agile creature. (Click here to see an earlier picture showing a more elegant “snatch”).
Comments welcomed, as always.
