The Photos Of Roy Cunningham

Another shot from Dove Stone Reservoir at the weekend, this time of a pair of pigeons (also known as Rock Doves, Columba livia).
I was photographing the pair, who seemed to be undertaking some kind of mating dance, when they suddenly started heading straight at me at quite a rate of knots! Because the lens was set at 300mm – and I didn’t want to waste time zooming out in case they flew off – I reeled off a couple of quick shots. This is one of them.
(I have to admit I’d never noticed the purple iridescence on the necks of pigeons before – although to be honest, I’ve not photographed them individually and at close range before. After checking the white balance several times, I eventually resorted to the ever-resourceful Wikipedia to prove that the camera doesn’t lie).
Camera: Canon EOS 5D Mk II w/ Sigma 70-300mm DG OS @ 300mm; Exposure: 1/250th sec @ f16; ISO: 500
