Dalmatian Pelican Preening in Vienna’s Tiergarten

A magical bird is the pelican.
Its beak can hold more than its belly can.
It can hold in its beak
Enough food for a week.
I’m darned if I know how the hell he can.

The beak of this particular Dalmatian Pelican (Pelecanus crispus) was too preoccupied with ripping out old, untidy feathers to be bothered about food! The Dalmatian Pelican is the largest species of pelican, weighing up to 15Kg and with a wingspan of nearly 3 metres. It is also the rarest species, with fewer than 20,000 (estimated) worldwide.
