European Peacock Butterfly (Underside View)

The European Peacock (Inachis io) is a brightly coloured butterfly, as you might expect by its name.

However, as this image shows, the underside of its wings is somewhat less spectacular! This apparently provides great camouflage when the butterfly is at rest on woodpiles, tree trunks or in barns, sheds or garages – common hibernation sites for this particular species.

This photo was taken at Wigan Flashes in Lancashire.
