Hippopotamus Swimming at Vienna’s Tiergarten

I’d never noticed before just how hairy a hippo’s ears really are!

This shot seemed the ideal way to continue the recent spate (i.e. today!) of monochrome images. It is of course a mighty Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius), which despite its size can outrun most humans, reaching speeds of up to 30km/h!

This specimen was seen at Vienna’s Tiergarten (literally “animal garden”, i.e. zoo) during a recent trip to Austria.
