The Photos Of Roy Cunningham

Nicely camouflaged in the grasses and mud at Leighton Moss the other day was this common snipe (Gallinago gallinago), using its long bill to seek out its next meal. These birds are great fun to watch as they bob up and down in the mud.
Trivial fact: the erratic flight of the snipe makes them very difficult for hunters to shoot – hence the term “sniper” to denote someone with excellent marksman skills.
